6A/374 - A.S.I. Air Speed Indicator Mk.IVC (Cat No AVG173)

Range 40 - 210 Knots, this is the large size ASI, as fitted to 1st WW aircraft, but allows for an increased speed range; it was designed to be fitted to 1920’s military naval aircraft (being in knots) and was in use up to the late 1930s, in such aircraft as the Hawker Nimrod and Osprey, Fairey Fox and many other types. This has a capsule movement which are much more reliable that the rubber diaphragm type of the 1st WW era. This instrument has now been completely dismantled and fully reconditioned but will require check calibrating before use, which we can do. There is the AM and Crown stamp on the rear, plus the 1st WW ‘A’ over an arrow, meaning its history goes back a long way. It was a luminous instrument but this material has been professionally removed, though it may have some residual background radiation from affected nearby parts; at least the harmful dust has been all removed. The figures have been re-painted in a brown colour mimicking decayed luminous paint. On the dial is painted by hand in minute writing ‘19/9/36’ which will be a repair or overhaul date. This pitot head is for aircraft with a separate static vent (for example fitted at the side of the fuselage), and is just a pressure head. RFC RNAS 1st World War Mk. VB Altimeter

This is fully overhauled and will be check calibrated before dispatch. It is a non-sensitive British altimeter of the type fitted to all RFC and RNAS military aircraft during the 1914-1918 conflict and indeed afterwards, up to the mid 1930s. We have thoroughly overhauled this instrument and it is in perfect working condition. The dial is rotated and set on zero on take off and it is then hoped than there is little pressure change at the end of the sortie, allowing a fair judgement of the lie of the land and more importantly the home airfield. This example was made by Short and Mason, who made instruments of the highest quality. These altimeters are extremely hard to find today. The pictured example may be a different make or Mk. to the actual model we will be shipping you, but will be identical in all other respects unless we advise you to the contrary. You will be shown a photo of the actual instrument before buying.

US Air Force Star Identifier A-N Type 1

Star identifier board marked with names of constellations, 2 sides - one for north, one for south. The clear plastic plates and white plastic template are contained within a leatherette case. From label with it: Published by the Hydrographic Office Washington in 1942 principally for the use of air navigators. It used the same principle as the original Rude Star Finder patented by Captain G.T. Rude. The instrument is a calculator, identical in principle with an astronomer's astrolabe. Two clear plates are provided for use in different latitudes: one is Latitude 15 degrees south and 15 degrees north whilst the other is marked 42 degrees north and 42 degrees south. We suspect there should be more, but are unsure how many. This rare item 240mm diameter and about 5mm thick, weight 178 Gms. Examples are in the collections of the Maritime Museum at Greenwich and in the Imperial War Museum. Year of manufacture unknown but it will be in the 2nd WW era.
